Lucy is a researcher and consultant in the field of gender and development, with a special focus on tourism as a development strategy. Her PhD (University of Manchester, 2007) focused on the gender dimensions of tourism development in Central America. Since May 2010, she has been the UNWTO’s main consultant on gender issues. During this time, she has helped to edit the UNWTO-UN Women Global Report on Women in Tourism and worked on gender programmes such as the Women in Tourism Empowerment Programme. In June 2012, she delivered the keynote speech at the 53rd UNWTO Commission for Africa seminar in Nigeria on opportunities for women and youth in African tourism. Lucy has worked as a consultant on a wide range of gender and development projects and, with Daniela Moreno Alarcón, recently co-developed the first good practices guide in Gender and Sustainable Tourism for the European Commission project Vocational Training and Sustainable Tourism (2012). She has published widely on different aspects of gender and tourism in international journals such as Review of International Political Economy, International Feminist Journal of Politics, New Political Economy and Current Issues in Tourism.
